The vast and fabulous Praia Lopes Mendes, situated on Ilha Grande, offshore from Costa Verde, is very probably one of Brazil's most beautiful beaches. However, its golden sand, azure water and perfect surfing waves must first be earned: to reach the beach, you must walk for around three hours, along sometimes difficult trails inhabited by monkeys. Those with less energy can always do the return journey by boat.
