The façade of the palace overlooks the Fa Ngum quay, alongside the Mekong. This imposing building was constructed between 1973 and 1986 on the site of King Anouvong's palace in a pompous mix of the Beaux-Arts style and traditional Asian architecture. It is not used as a residence, but is home to the government's legal offices and acts as the venue for major State receptions.
