AquaRio, South America's largest aquarium, was inaugurated in 2016. Housed in a refrigerated former warehouse over 26000m2/279861ft2, 8000 marine animals reside in 28 pools filled by more than 4.5 million litres of water, the equivalent of two Olympic pools. A massive transparent tunnel (truly magical at night) cuts across the main pool. There is also a virtual aquarium that simulates an underwater experience.
