The Vargas Swamp (pantano) Battle, on 25 July 1819, made the decisive victory of the Battle of Boyacá possible, 13 days later. On the occasion of celebrations marking 150 years of independence, Rodrigo Arenas Betancourt (1919-95) created the largest sculpture ever made in Colombia: Monumento a Los Lanceros del Pantano de Vargas. This bronze work is framed by a 33m-high concrete structure and pays homage to those who fought for the Republican cause.
